My mom was very proud of her garden in the Bronx. I remember she grew the biggest squash anybody had ever seen. It became a spectacle in the neighborhood. Because of our need to be close to the land, you will always find a makeshift garden on a windowsill, in a small corner of a lot, or in my mother’s case, taking up the whole front yard!
