Visiting my friend upstate in 2019, I was enthralled with her hen house with its many roosters, hens and chickens. I noticed this one particular rooster dominated the roost. He gave me that look as if to let me know that he was the alpha rooster — The Boss. The owner named him Chestnut Chick because as a chick, he would sleep on his back when his belly was rubbed. As Chestnut Chick grew older, he would constantly battle the other roosters for dominance of the hen house. He became so troublesome that he was sent away and resettled elsewhere. This is my tribute to this boss of a rooster.
